Alison Levine

Alison Levine

Adventurer/explorer
Alison Levine

Alison Levine is a history-making polar explorer and mountaineer. She served as team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, climbed the highest peak on each continent and skied to both the North and South Poles—a feat known as the Adventure Grand Slam—which only twenty people in the world have achieved. In January 2008, she made history as the first American to complete a 600-mile traverse across west Antarctica to the South Pole following the route of legendary explorer Reinhold Messner. Levine completed this arduous journey on skis while hauling 150 pounds of her gear and supplies in a sled harnessed to her waist. She made history again in 2016 when she completed two first ascents: Hall Peak in Antarctica and Khang Karpo in Nepal. Her success in extreme environments is noteworthy given she has had three heart surgeries and suffers from Raynaud’s disease, which causes the arteries that feed her fingers and toes to collapse in cold weather—leaving her at extreme risk for frostbite.

In addition to climbing mountains, Levine has also spent time climbing the corporate ladder. She has worked for several Fortune 500 companies in both sales and marketing roles and spent three years at Goldman Sachs. She left Wall Street in 2003 to serve as Deputy Finance Director for Arnold Schwarzenegger in his successful bid to become governor of California.

When not challenging herself in the outdoors, Levine focuses on training others to become strong leaders. She spent four years as an adjunct professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership. In 2013 she transitioned from training cadets to working with corporate leaders and currently serves on the board and faculty of the Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point—one of the nation’s premiere executive leader development programs. She also served as a board member and Senior Fellow at the Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics at Duke University.

Levine is the founder of the Climb High Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of jobless women in western Uganda by training them to be trekking guides and porters in their local mountains, thus allowing them to earn a sustainable living wage through climbing-related tourism. Prior to her work in Uganda, women’s only avenue to earn money in this area of the country was through prostitution. Her efforts enabled the very first group of local women to climb Uganda’s highest peak—Mt Stanley. Her work to change the lives of women in Africa is the subject of the PBS documentary Living Courageously. Her newest role is that of executive producer of the upcoming documentary film The Glass Ceiling (www.theglassceilingmovie.com), which chronicles the life of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa (1961-1993), the first female Sherpa to summit Mt. Everest.

In 2019, Levine was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor which recognizes individuals whose accomplishments in their field and inspired service to our nation are cause for celebration. The Medal has been officially recognized by both Houses of Congress as one of our nation’s most prestigious awards and is annually memorialized in the Congressional Record.

Levine is the author of the New York Times best-seller On the Edge: Leadership Lessons from Mount Everest and other Extreme Environments. Having spent prolonged periods of time in some of the world's most dangerous and inhospitable places, she tackles the topics of creating cohesive teams, taking responsible risks, and developing no-nonsense leaders that can succeed in times of uncertainty.

FUN FACT: Levine’s life story was the inspiration for a craft beer called Conquer the Route Chocolate Stout which is distributed by Bold Missy Brewery and features her likeness on the label.

Ornithologist,
Tel Aviv University, Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel

Yossi Leshem is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University, and founder of the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration. In 1971, he began his career at the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and was CEO (1991-1995) and chair of its public council.

Prof. Leshem has been researching bird migration and raptor breeding ecology for 5 decades. His doctoral research at Tel Aviv University, conducted in cooperation with the Israel Air Force, reduced aircraft-bird collisions by 76%, thus saving the national budget $1.5 billion. Yossi developed an online scientific educational curriculum (www.birds.org.il) that is currently taught in approximately 450 schools. He spearheaded the national effort to use barn owls as biological pest control agents in agriculture, significantly reducing the use of pesticides, and led an extensive research project in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute at Radolfzell to track migrating storks, using satellite transmitters. To this project joined the Ministry of Education in Israel, who financed the program to promote science and technology studies by tracking the Migrating Storks on-line.

Since 2002, Prof. Leshem has initiated a host of successful joint projects with the Jordanians and Palestinians using Barn Owls as biological pest control agents in agriculture, combining education, research, and nature conservation. The project became a national and regional project with 4,500 nesting boxes which reduced dramatically the use of pesticides in the region. Now Prof. Leshem leads a trilateral project with Cyprus, Greece and Israel on the same subject. In parallel, he works with the Chief of General Staff’s office to implement the "Nature Defense Forces – Commanders Take Responsibility for their Environment" project. Today, in this initiate, there are 60 projects with an educational emphasis for the commanders and soldiers to protect nature and the environment.

Prof. Leshem received many awards such as Lifetime Achievement Award for Environmental Protection, the Minister for Environmental Protection on Israel's 60th independence celebrations (2008); Bruno H. Schubert Foundation Award for World Nature Conservation (2012); 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award, The Israel Society of Ecology and Environmental Sciences; Honorary Fellowship award, Board of Governors, Technion (2017); Honorary Membership, Israel Zoological Society (2018), The award of "Significant Contributor to Israel Aviation", the Israeli Air Line Pilots Association (2019) and a medal of appreciation from the commander of the Israeli Air Force.

While sitting next to a top cybersecurity expert, Dexter noticed he could see word and PDF documnets on his laptop. He thought to himself, why should I be able to see a document on his screen?  It’s none of my business!  Why isn’t there a technology that provides real protection from snooping?

In 2018, Dexter founded Smart Eye Technology with a bold purpose — to protect everyone’s right to digital privacy. Since then he has been resolutely focused on creating the most effective document privacy and security solutions — all in a single platform. For Dexter, this is just the beginning. He is constantly focused on “what’s next”, and will continue to add new innovative features as the needs of his customers continue to evolve.
